There have been many studies and reports which make reference to IT and the 'green' issue. This includes the Financial Times who reported in June 2007 "It is essential not just to look at the computer in use, but the whole lifecycle", and Simon Mingay from Gartner who said " 'Going green' will become an essential activity of all IT-directors"
IT and the environment: the facts
"IT equipment worldwide is responsible for 2% of C02 emissions which corresponds to the amounts of CO2 emitted by airplanes."
Gartner
"For approximately each $1 spent on computer hardware, a further $0.5 needs to be spent for electricity. Within the next 4 years, this number is to rise by 54%"
IDC, Worldwide Server Power and Cooling Expense 2006 - 2010
"One search request at Google consumes as much energy as an energy saving lamp per hour."
Die Zeit, August 2007

APC announced in July 2007 that the company is a founding member of The Green Grid, a newly formed global consortium of information technology (IT) specialists dedicated to developing and promoting energy efficiency for data centres and information service delivery. APC’s participation in The Green Grid further reinforces the company’s commitment to the management of energy and power usage in the data centre. APC will provide significant technical expertise garnered from APC’s extensive history as a leader in critical data centre infrastructure.
“Advancements in the use of new technologies focused on delivering greater useful computing output to meet varied consumer and industry demands are placing more energy demands on the data centre than ever before,” said Neil Rasmussen, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, APC. “APC has been a longstanding proponent of a more energy efficient environment in the data centre, offering its InfraStruXure® architecture as one potential solution to address power and cooling issues. By lending our expertise and leadership to The Green Grid since the very beginning, we hope to continue to advance the discussion of achieving greater energy efficiency, while meeting the dramatic increases in computing demand in consideration of the rising power costs and energy consumption that are placing a major strain on organisations and the environment.”
APC joins several organisations within The Green Grid representing critical segments of the data centre eco-system. APC serves on The Green Grid board of directors, along with other companies including AMD, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Rackable Systems, SprayCool, Sun Microsystems, and VMware.

Our programs extend beyond environmental compliance to focus on business operations, technological innovation, product design, and customer solutions to reduce environmental footprints globally.
• Energy Conservation
We conserve energy to reduce energy costs and lessen environmental impact. We design our facilities with state-of-the-art control systems and high-efficiency chillers in new buildings to support this objective.
• Environmental Management
We implement innovative programs to increase energy efficiency in our operations, reduce waste, and help protect the environment in communities around the world.
• Product Stewardship
We integrate environmental policies and social accountability into Cisco operations and culture. We collaborate cross-functionally to implement programs that reduce the environmental impact associated with our networking products throughout their lifecycle, from product development, manufacturing, and use to service and end-of-life.
• Recycling and Waste Reduction
We reuse and recycle waste from our offices and operations. We measure our progress by auditing variables such as how much material is diverted from landfills and program costs per employee.
• Executive Sponsorship and Governance
Our EcoBoard executive leadership team oversees our operations as a “green” business. This team drives the vision and strategy for product design and development, and determines how our solutions can be used to address global environmental issues.

Last year over 400,000 tonnes of cartridges ended up as waste in landfills, and that's just in the UK alone! The S.T.A.R. programme ('Samsung Takeback and Recycling') for printer consumables has been established because printer cartridges contain substances that could be potentially harmful to the environment if not properly controlled, and to ensure that all valuable and re-useable materials are recovered.
The S.T.A.R. programme prevents contamination of landfill sites or incinerators, by diverting printer consumables away from the waste stream, and recycling each one back into plastics, metals, and other materials which can be used again.
Participation is easy, simple and free of charge.
Please note: S.T.A.R. is only for used toner cartridges of laser printers, fax and multi function printers, manufactured by Samsung.
